Mandelic acid is a mild lipophilic multipurpose alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. It is gentle on the skin. Due to its larger molecular size, it is absorbed at a slower rate than glycolic acid hence it cause less irritation to the skin.

Like other AHAs, mandelic acid is exfoliating, so helps to stimulate cell renewal, scars fading and maintains skin health in general.

The exfoliating nature of mandelic acid also minimises congestion and manages pore size, and that “by stimulating new cell renewal it [the acid] stimulates collagen formation, and minimizes fine line and wrinkles and pigmentation.”

The most notable difference between mandelic acid and other exfoliating AHAs and BHAs such as glycolic, lactic and salicylic, is that it is far gentler on the skin. This makes it perfect for sensitive skin and those suffering with rosacea. The reason it’s gentle is due to its molecule size. Mandelic acid is the gentlest alpha hydroxy acid so it has the largest molecular structure. This means it doesn’t penetrate as deeply as glycolic acid.
