Every decision we make is one to right by the environment...
We nix the wasteful strings, tags, and staples on our bags, and our tea bags are compostable! We are also all about transparency, so here's the nitty gritty on how we get from tea bag to soil.
Our pyramid tea bags are made from a plant starch know as PLA. PLA is made primary of poly lactic acid, while it sounds far from plant based, it actually undergoes a 2-step degradation process to fully compost. First, the moisture and heat in the compost pile attach the PLA polymer chains and split them apart, creating smaller polymers and finally lactic acid. Microorganisms in compost and soil consume the smaller polymer fragments and lactic acid as nutrients. Since lactic acid is widely found in nature, a large number of organisms metabolize lactic acid - including fungi and bacteria. The end result is carbon dioxide, water and also humus, a soil nutrient. So next time you've finished enjoying your cup of tea, toss your tea bags in the compost bin and know you're doing right by Mother Nature.
