What Is Keloid Scarring

Generally caused by surgery, accidents, acne and piercing or modification of the skin, keloid formations are raised red or purple bumps which usually become paler over time. Keloids occur as a result of an overproduction of collagen and may continue to grow outside of the wound area, eventually becoming larger than the original injury. These bumps tend to appear and grow slowly, taking between 3 - 12 months to appear. The scar tissue of a keloid may be itchy or tender but is ultimately benign and harmless.
