Tazah Ground Sumac

Sumac is a dark red spice that is grown on the sumac berry bush throughout the Middle East. It is made by grinding the dried berries from the sumac shrub. It has a sour note similar to lemon and vinegar with slightly biter finish. It is predominantly used in Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and North African Cuisine

History of Sumac

Sumac is rich in antioxidants and was once used medicinally as an astringent and antiseptic in medieval medicine, primarily in the Middle Eastern and South Asian Countries where it was more readily available at the time.

What is Sumac ideal for

Sumac is almost exclusively used in savory dishes. More commonly, it is used to flavor vegetables, salads, meats and can also be used as a marinade in spice rubs and dressings. Sumac is known to be used in the famous Mediterranean salad, Fattoush. It is also known for being mixed into a spice blend in order to make zaatar.
